(NDR)

   Political party. Known in Russian as Nash Dom—Rossiia, the NDR operated during the second half of the 1990s. The pro-Yeltsin party was founded by then–Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin as an economically liberal, centrist movement. In the mid-1990s, Our Home functioned as Russia’s “party of power,” enjoying support from the Kremlin, oligarchs, the media, and major Russian corporations, including Lukoil and Gazprom. The party platform focused on greater levels of personal freedom, expansion of private property, and better observance of the law. The NDR also supported lower military spending, increased agricultural subsidies, anti-corruption campaigns, and pro-family legislation. In the 1995 election to the State Duma, the party won 10 percent of the vote, second only to the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. Our Home—Russia played a central role in supporting Yeltsin’s reelection during the 1996 presidential election. The party’s fortunes were closely tied to those of Chernomyrdin, and when he failed in his bid for a second term as prime minister, the NDR faltered accordingly. Yeltsin switched his support to Unity prior to the 1999 parliamentary elections, effectively banishing the NDR to the political wasteland.
